The stoics discovered how to be unbothered by the world.
Seneca the Younger:
We suffer more from the imagination than in reality.
The imagination comes up with worst case scenarios. Maybe it’s a dreaded interaction with your boss, or family. But they don’t control your imagination. The human mind controls its own imagination.
Marcus Aurelius:
You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.
Marcus knew the importance of focusing on what he was grateful for. He strove to be present, without being distracted by fear, doubt and ego.
Epictetus:
The more we value things outside our control, the less control we have.
Epictetus was born a slave. He witnessed the misery of his rich and powerful masters. Privilege does not mean happiness.
In the modern world, plenty of things draw our attention. Substances, games, social media, career, admiration from others. It’s important to regulate the mind. Unplug from the internet. Focus on the breath. Write. Ask yourself what matters.
