Ego and Super Ego walk into a bar. The bartender says, “I’m going to need to see some ID”.
Now that we have gotten the Freud humor out of the way its time to reflect on how and possibly why addiction effects an individual’s behavior. The general psychology theory is that an addict (in this case, someone addicted to alcohol) will have his/her super ego suppressed while intoxicated, which can lead to aggressive behavior.
I would like to carry this idea forward a little by theorizing that abuse of just about any substance leads to the suppression of the super ego, which then causes an individual to act irrationally. This is because there is an imbalance between the ID and ego.
In order to better reflect upon this idea, an introduction into Freudian theory regarding the ID, ego and super ego will be helpful. I’ll post about this next time. If you have any comments or questions, please feel free to communicate them through this blog.
